Floristry has earned a poor reputation for the amount of waste it creates, especially those dreaded green oasis blocks… aaaargh! Not to mention how harmful they are to both the environment and the florist working with them.

Sustainability sits firmly at the centre of my business. As a fully trained florist, I feel a real responsibility to move with the times. For me, there’s simply no excuse anymore for relying on non-biodegradable foam, excessive plastic or dated poly ribbons. The industry has leaned on these materials for decades, so I’ve consciously re-trained myself in more traditional methods working with chicken wire, handmade wooden frames, biodegradable and bamboo trays, agra wool blocks and natural materials such as moss.

I reuse and recycle any plastic pots and trays already in circulation, make my own compost and collaborate with local compost producers. To keep customers informed, my designs are labelled with clear compostable or recycling icons. All packaging is paper-based, sometimes even wrapped in yesterday’s newspapers.  Water bubbles are created using fully compostable bio-bags.

My tools are cleaned with non-toxic, organic solutions, and any unsold or short-stemmed flowers are thoughtfully donated to local hospices and charities.

Every stem is carefully conditioned and nourished with British-made flower food to give it the longest vase life possible. And when blooms finally reach the end of their cycle, I salvage and dry what I can, often turning petals into my own natural confetti.
